HEARTLIGHT X3 SYSTEM TO TREAT ATRIAL FIBRILLATION AVAILABLE NOW

PHILADELPHIA, October 14, 2021 – Jefferson Health – Abington has completed the hospital’s 50th HeartLight procedure. Along with this milestone achievement, Jefferson Health – Abington currently is the only hospital in Pennsylvania offering the next generation HeartLight X3 technology, which combines precise laser energy and an ultra-conforming balloon for fast, predictable, and durable pulmonary vein isolation for patients with AFib.

What is Atrial Fibrillation?

“AFib” is a type of arrhythmia that occurs when one’s heart’s electrical rhythm is disrupted in such a way that it beats chaotically and quickly. This prevents the blood from being pumped efficiently which can lead to a stroke, shortness of breath, weakness, fainting, and a significant reduction in quality of life. Every year in the U.S., AFib affects 3 to 6 million people.

How is AFib treated?

A common treatment for AFib is Pulmonary Vein Isolation (PVI), which is a minimally invasive procedure where a catheter is inserted into a vein in the leg and advanced into the heart, where energy is used to block abnormal electrical pathways by creating lines of scar tissue. PVI is often an effective and low-impact way to isolate the electrical signals that cause AFib.

What Makes HeartLight X3 Unique?

HeartLight X3 is the first and only PVI technology that combines five unique features – laser energy, visual guidance, titratable energy, an ultra-compliant balloon design, and an integrated motor – for continuous, circumferential lesion creation under direct physician control. The combination of these features provides optimal outcomes for patients. Long-term data from the X3 Pivotal Confirmatory Trial found that 71.9% of patients treated with the HeartLight X3 System were free from AFib at 12 months.

Other HeartLight X3 benefits include approximately one hour procedure time, as few as three-minute vein isolation, and seven-minute fluoroscopy time. Most patients treated with HeartLight X3 can have their AFib addressed with a single procedure, and they typically recover quickly, going home the same or next day.
